Megaship Benjamin Franklin Arrives In Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS-SF) — A quarter-mile-long megaship that’s a largest load boat ever to revisit a U.S. eased a approach underneath a Golden Gate Bridge early Thursday as it headed toward a Port of Oakland.

The 1,300-foot-long Benjamin Franklin, a 10th largest enclosure boat in a world, was launched from a Chinese shipyard final month and arrived during a Port of Los Angeles over a weekend.

It changed underneath a 200-foot-high Golden Gate Bridge during around 9:30 a.m. assisted by a swift of tugboats and being followed by news helicopters.

It afterwards eased underneath a Bay Bridge as it headed toward Berth 24 during a Ports America Outer Harbor Terminal where it will stay until Sunday afternoon or Monday morning, pier officials said.

“This is a miracle for a Port of Oakland and for U.S. trade,” pronounced a Port’s Maritime Director, John Driscoll in a statement. “We’ll see some-more of these vast ships before long. This vessel also represents and reinforces a mercantile partnership between a U.S. and France.”

The boat is operated by CMA CGM, a shipping association formed in Marseille, France.

Shipping association officials pronounced they devise to use a boat in unchanging use joining China with a West Coast of a U.S.

Oakland is one of usually a handful of U.S. ports that can accept megaships, that lift vast loads of cargo.

The pier has invested millions of dollars in changes, including dredging berths and channels to inlet of 50 feet, lifting a heights of cranes and modernizing sea terminals, pier officials said.

Last month, pier officials announced they will be lifting a tallness of 4 gantry cranes during a Oakland International Container Terminal by 26 feet to accommodate megaships. The $13.95 million plan is scheduled to start in April.
